Despite the absence of a Rockstar Games title during the four-day event, spirits were high at this year’s Summer Game Fest as the gaming industry got excited about the upcoming release of “Grand Theft Auto VI.”
No, GTA 6 did not officially participate in host Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Live presentation or media and creator experience event in downtown Los Angeles. But its presence was felt, as the release date was announced to coincide with the game’s debut, which is set to take all areas of pop culture by storm in November.
And according to game studio executives and developers Variety spoke with on the ground, September overlaps (Remedy’s Control Resonant, PlayStation’s Wolverine, Nintendo’s Orbitals, etc.) and a crowded early 2027 calendar (Capcom’s Resident Evil: Veronica, Amazon’s Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis) are fine if the industry as a whole benefits. “GTA 6” caused a boom in the gaming industry.
“I take this as a reflection of good things for the industry and for players, right?” Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty told Variety during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday during the Game Fest event. This weekend, Xbox revealed that its biggest release of the year, Gears of War: E-Day, will be released on October 6th (not September, but it’s pretty close), and set the release date for its new Fable game to February 23, 2027. As previously announced, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be released on October 23rd.
“There’s a lot of work to do and I’m very excited,” Booty said. “I think all these games show that this industry is undergoing active development. At the end of the day, that’s great for the players.”
Of course, Xbox rival PlayStation has another very good reason to be excited about releasing third-party titles. Console sales will definitely increase during the period as GTA 6 will be released on these platforms first before setting up a PC launch.
While previewing the upcoming releases “Barbie Rewind” and “Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered” to the media, Atari developers gleefully joked about being the only “brave” brand going up against “GTA 6” in November, when both retro “Barbie” and “Godzilla” games are scheduled to debut.
Even some of the biggest game franchises of all time are giving space to Take-Two Interactive’s GTA 6, and Square Enix has revealed a spring 2027 date for the next conclusion to its Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy.
“I think I can speak for all game developers when I say it would probably be better to avoid a similar launch window to GTA 6,” Final Fantasy VII: Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi told Variety. “But for our game in particular, the game still needs a lot of polish and refinement before we can feel comfortable saying it’s ready for release. But when we looked at the development and release timeline, we felt that spring 2027 was the right time. And that just happened to be after that GTA 6 launch.”
Overall, the atmosphere at SGF 2026 was noticeably uplifted compared to last year and 2024, when the main talking points were the layoffs and multiple game cancellations and releases plaguing the industry.
While the gaming industry is still struggling with this reality (Xbox just recently revealed plans for a “reset” under new CEO Asha Sharma), the looks in developers’ eyes have gone from fatigue and anxiety to genuine hope, based on a plausible truth: that GTA 6 will be of some benefit to everyone.
Now, as for why “GTA 6” hasn’t been the main focus of SGF, Take-Two has promised to start marketing “GTA 6” in earnest this summer. And thank you to them for giving others a brief period to shine this June before Vice City takes over everything.
