Following the success of “Hoppers” earlier this year, Pixar will release its next animated film, “Gut,” one week before “Toy Story 5” hits theaters. Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne play two cats who roam Italy.
Ruffalo provides the voice of Nero, a brash black cat, and Fishburne plays Rocco, a ruthless cat mob boss.
“In ‘The Gut,’ after years of navigating the canal-infested and superstitious Venice of Italy, Nero begins to question whether he has lived the right life,” the logline teases. “Beholden to Rocco, the boss of the local cat gang, Nero finds himself in a corner and is forced to forge a completely unexpected friendship that may ultimately lead to his purpose—unless Venice defeats him first.”
The teaser trailer shows a group of cats hanging out on a rooftop, with one of them snapping its claws like a gangster wielding a knife. The scene shifts to a dimly lit building where Nero and Rocco interrogate their feline friends about Tuna’s disappearance. However, the three cats are easily distracted by the bright light bulb and string hanging above. They grab the light with their paws and start fighting each other over it, with Rocco munching on it and breaking the bulb.
“Gut” will continue Pixar’s strong track record following “The Hoppers” and last year’s “Inside Head 2,” which grossed about $1.7 billion worldwide. The new film will be directed by Enrico Casarosa and produced by Andrea Warren from the Luca filmmaking team. Scheduled to be released in theaters on March 5, 2027.
