After 40 years together, Goldie Hawn appreciates the “freedom” she still feels in her relationship with Kurt Russell.
The legendary actress, who is preparing to release her first children’s book, After School Kindness Crew: Ruth’s Pooches, on May 5th with co-author Lynn Oliver, spoke about this new chapter in her life and explained how her bond with Russell continues to grow stronger after 43 years together.
“My mission in life is to be happy. My mission in life is to be a role model for my children and my family,” Horne, who turned 80 in November, told People magazine.
“As you get older, things can get harder. Your state of mind matters. How you look at life, how you value each moment in your life matters, because you’re feeding your brain. So I say, ‘Everything is great right now.'”
Including his relationship with Russell.
She explained that she still feels “free” to Hawn, saying, “When I say free, I mean liberating. I don’t feel trapped,” and said that she and Russell are “a good fit.”
“We don’t always see eye to eye, but that’s okay. We’re both very spontaneous.[Our relationship]was nourished by a lot of positives, a lot of great life together.”
Hawn has two children, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, from her marriage to Bill Hudson, and Russell has a son, Boston Russell, from his ex-wife Season Hubley. Horn and Russell began dating in 1983 and later had a son, Wyatt Russell.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” in 2024, the Academy Award-winning actress opened up about her and Russell’s shared love for family, explaining why it was the “glue” of their relationship.
“We don’t agree on everything,” Horn said in a clip shared with People. “His politics are different than mine. You know, there are all kinds of things that can divide you. But the only thing we have, the greatest thing in God’s world, is our family.
“That’s where we grow, that’s where we get incredible joy, and that’s where we’re really focused.”
Despite their differences, Horne said the appeal stemmed from Russell’s “focus on kids.”
“He’s a family man,” Horn said. “I can’t explain it, but he was the right person for me. It wasn’t just because he was sexy and handsome and all of that turned me on. It was because he was number one, matching my dedication to my children. Seduction was just his personality and his focus on children.”
Their daughter Kate Hudson had similar feelings.
“They’ve been together for over 40 years. They’re the heart of our family,” Hudson said on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” in 2024.
“I think it looks like that from the outside, but inside, in a good way, our family is just crazy. We’re all different, but we all want to enjoy our lives. There’s so much joy in life.
“Even when we’re arguing and people are mad at each other, I feel like there’s a life force in our family. It’s so wonderful.”
With the release of his new book, Horne is entering the next season of his life.
“Ultimately, I think every life needs sections…doing the same thing over and over again for the rest of your life is just not that interesting to me,” Horn told People.
“And I probably decided at age 55 or so… ‘What am I going to do with the next part of my life?’ And I also knew there was more to learn and more to do.”
