Universal’s sci-fi thriller “Disclosure Day” took the top spot at the British and Irish box office with an opening weekend of £5.5 million ($7.3 million).
Universal also secured a runner-up spot for director Curry Barker’s horror-romance “Obsession.” In the fifth frame, the breakout title continued its impressive momentum, earning $2 million, bringing its cumulative total to $17.9 million.
Paramount’s horror parody reboot Scary Movie debuted in third place in its second session with $3.5 million. The film has currently collected a total of $9.6 million in 10 days.
A24’s viral horror “Backrooms” follows in fourth place, earning $1.3 million in its third weekend of release and amassing a whopping profit of $9.6 million. Masters of the Universe, distributed by Sony, cracked the top five in its second weekend, collecting $1.1 million, lowering its total to $5.7 million.
Universal’s music biopic “Michael” remained in sixth place for its eighth week, earning $985,027 for a total of $69.4 million. Disney’s Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian and Grogu, came in at No. 7 in the fourth slot, adding $672,122 to take its peak to $20 million.
Trafalgar Releasing came in 8th place with $390,675 for the concert event “BTS World Tour ‘Arirang’ in Busan: Live Viewing”. Disney’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 finished in ninth place in its seventh week with $317,685 and grossed $45.49 million. “The Sheep Detectives,” distributed by Sony, filled out the top 10 in its sixth frame, adding $309,705 for a total of $12.8 million.
For future theatrical release slots, the release schedule will be led by Disney’s long-awaited animated sequel Toy Story 5, opening in more than 300 theaters on June 19th. Baklania Media is also set to make a big mark in the week, starting with the release of ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ on June 16th, followed by the releases of ‘Cocktail 2’ and ‘Zindagi Once More’ on June 19th. Anime viewers will see Anime Ltd release Mamoru Oshii’s 1985 classic “Angel’s Egg” on June 17th.
Independent contemporary titles hitting screens June 19 include Central City Media’s “Girlfriends” and Sarah Friedland’s “Familiar Touch.” Additional releases include “Cactus Pears” from Lotus Visual Productions, as well as specialty independent titles “Effi O Blaenau” via Vue Lumière, “Nino”, “Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day”, “Lesbian Space Princess”, “Killing Anna” and the Radiance Films release “Two Boxes: La Cabineta + El televisor”.
