Rapper Mystikal, known for his 2000 hit song “Shake Ya Ass,” was sentenced to 20 years in prison for a 2022 rape case.
The Louisiana hitmaker was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison for third-degree rape, according to ABC affiliate WBRZ.
The rapper, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, responded in court Tuesday after his victim asked for the maximum sentence, the paper said.
“If I did that to you, I deserve capital punishment,” he said.
The Grammy-nominated rapper pleaded guilty in March in court in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, but on Friday, ahead of sentencing, Tyler’s attorney filed documents seeking to withdraw the guilty plea.
According to WBRZ, the motion says the musician “didn’t have ample opportunity to fully consider” the consequences before accepting the plea deal, which lowered the charges from the original charge of first-degree rape.
Although the case was dismissed, Tyler, 55, claimed that when he agreed to the plea deal, he was “in severe emotional distress and under great pressure to make an immediate decision.”
Representatives for Mr. Tyler did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment Tuesday night.
Prosecutors in the case chose not to pursue additional charges, including false imprisonment, simple criminal damage, simple robbery, and domestic violence by strangulation and simple robbery, through a filing called a noor prosec, People reported.
The encounter, which occurred in 2022, left the victim hospitalized with minor injuries.
“According to Sheriff Bobby Webre, on July 30 at approximately 11:58 p.m., Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an area hospital in reference to a sexual assault,” said an Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office press release read at the time.
The rapper has been held without bail at Ascension Parish Jail since 2022.
