Dawood Hirumandi’s documentary ‘Paikar’ is featured by Taskovsky

Taskovsky Films has acquired distribution rights to the documentary “Paikar,” the feature debut of Afghan-Dutch filmmaker Dawood Hirumandi, which will have its world premiere in IDFA’s Luminous section.

Born in Afghanistan and raised in exile, Hilmandi grew up in the shadow of his father, Baba, a former Mujahideen fighter who later became an imam, author, and poet. For years, Baba’s silence and authority ruled the home, leaving little room for questions or kindness. However, behind his severity lived a thoughtful and sensitive person, whose words and poems hinted at a tenderness that is rarely shown.

After losing her life and returning to her father, Hilmandi begins a journey to bridge the distance between them. Together, they trace Baba’s past across Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq, places marked by faith and violence, exile and return.

Producers are Frank Hoeve and Katja Draaijer of Amsterdam-based Baldr Film. Cinema Delicatessen will be in charge of distribution for the Netherlands.

Irena Taskovsky, Head of Acquisitions at Taskovsky Films, said: “‘Pykar’ speaks to the invisible wounds of those living in the shadow of conflict. Its roots are in Afghanistan, but its resonance reaches far beyond wherever families are divided by war, silence and ideology. This is a film for our time, a reminder that humanity is always bigger than history.”

Director Hove added, “‘Pykar’ is an intimate human story, and Taskowski’s unwavering dedication to meaningful cinema ensures that films like this reach a truly moving audience.”

Hilmandi’s video essay “Me Montage” opened the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. He won the top prize in the Open Doors program at the 2017 Locarno Film Festival for his pitch for “Badeszenen.”
