Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the Persona video game series, Variety has learned from sources.
Christopher Monfett will serve as executive producer and showrunner, as well as writing the script for the adaptation. 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Robert Atwood will also executive produce along with Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson through Story Kitchen. Toru Nakahara of Sega will serve as executive producer. Emily Feher is overseeing the project for 21 Laps, which currently has a general TV deal with Netflix.
Netflix declined to comment.
Persona has proven to be a very popular RPG series. The plot varies from game to game, but usually focuses on Japanese high school students who must live normal daily lives and form and maintain friendships while also dealing with supernatural threats.
The Persona franchise, developed by P-Studios (a division of Atlus) and published by Sega, has had six major titles so far, with the seventh installment, Persona 6, officially confirmed to be in production in June 2026. The franchise also has 15 related spin-offs. These games originated as spin-offs of the Japanese game series Shin Megami Tensei, with Revelations: Persona appearing in 1996. The most recent release was “Persona 5 the Phantom X” in 2025. Persona 4 Revival is scheduled to be released in February 2027.
If this story goes forward, this won’t be the first Netflix series based on a video game IP. The streamer has produced not only the live-action TV show “The Witcher,” but also animated shows like “Arcane,” “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” and “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.”
Monfetto has previously written for shows such as Syfy’s “12 Monkeys,” Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard” and Fox and ABC’s “9-1-1.” He also serves as a writer and co-executive producer on the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series “VisionQuest.”
In the television sector, 21 Laps is best known for producing the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which recently concluded after five blockbuster seasons on the streamer. The show helped put Netflix originals on the map and prove that streaming series can be as successful, if not more successful, than traditional broadcast shows. 21 Laps also produces hit shows such as “The Perfect Couple” and “Last Man Standing,” as well as successful films such as recent hits “Backrooms” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the latter of which Levy served as director and co-writer.
Story Kitchen was founded in 2022 by Sonic the Hedgehog producer Johnson, former agency partner Goldberg, veteran production executive Stevenson and creative director Elena Sandoval. The company specializes in adapting video games and other non-traditional IP to television and film. Current plans include the live-action Tomb Raider series and the live-action Life is Strange, both available on Amazon Prime Video.
Mr. Monfetto is repped by Industry Entertainment. 21 Laps is represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham. Story Kitchen is repped by WME and Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn.
