Danes later recalled that their relationship was born out of friendship rather than instant romance. “I had just recently become single and had never been single before, so we were just friends for a while,” she told Marie Claire in 2017. “[Hugh and I]found Rhode Island in its boldest, most beautiful fall, and one day I was riding my bike by the water, and it was sparkling and idyllic, and I just had this stupid epiphany, like, I’m really happy.”
Appearing on the Armchair Expert podcast in 2024, Danes also recalled how her one-night stand with a stranger solidified her feelings for Dancy. She recalled her current husband and thought, “Oh my god! I’m going to marry this guy.”
February 2009
On February 6, 2009, People magazine confirmed that Danes and Dancy were engaged. The two were photographed together at several glamorous events that year, including Vanity Fair’s Oscar afterparty in February, the Time 100 Gala in May, and the opening night of County of Kings at the Public Theater in October.

September 2009
On September 28, 2009, People magazine confirmed that Danes and Dancy had married privately in France several weeks earlier.
September 2012
Two months after Danes’ rep confirmed she was pregnant with the couple’s first child, she won an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in the series “Homeland.” In her acceptance speech, she gave a shout-out to Dancy: “My husband, my love, my life, and my baby’s daddy. Nothing means anything without you. I love you so much. I appreciate you so much. Thank you.”

December 2012
CBS News reported on December 20, 2012 that Danes and Dancy welcomed their first child, Silas Michael Christopher. Days later, she was photographed putting Cyrus in a stroller in New York City on Christmas Eve.

August 2018
The couple’s second son, Rowan, was born on August 27, 2018, People reported. Before Rowan’s arrival, Danes appeared on The Howard Stern Show and said of her second pregnancy: “We’ve been wanting to have another child for a while and now we’re here.”
2022
After only making a handful of appearances since welcoming their second child, Danes and Dancy attended even more events in 2022. Danes and Dancy support each other’s projects, appearing on the red carpet to promote Danes’ series “The Essex Serpent” in April, “Fleischman is in Trouble” in November, and Dancy’s film “Downton Abbey: A New Era” in May.

July 2023
The couple gave birth to a baby girl on July 11, 2023, but in line with their determination to maintain a more private personal life, they have not yet announced their daughter’s name.
November 2025
On November 5, 2025, the couple attended the New York premiere of Danes’ new mystery thriller The Beast in Me, which also stars Matthew Rhys and Brittany Snow. To celebrate the occasion, the Dane turned heads in a floor-length red dress with a plunging neckline, while Dancy wore a gray suit.
