A former friend of Will Smith is seeking testimony against his wife Jada Pinkett Smith in a $3 million lawsuit filed in November 2025.
Bilal Salaam, who claims Jada confronted and threatened him at Will’s birthday party in September 2021, asked a judge in an email on July 7 to require the actor to participate in a deposition, according to legal documents obtained by Page Six.
Jada’s lawyers responded by saying that the Men in Black star is “not a party to this lawsuit” and has not been formally subpoenaed, so there is “nothing to meet and discuss.”
“To the extent you seek his deposition, you must follow applicable procedures for obtaining discovery from non-parties,” the email states.
Jada’s team also argued that Salam, who is representing him in the legal battle, has not provided evidence to support his claims, and asked that Salam be required to provide evidence of medical records showing he has suffered emotional distress as a result of the alleged threats.
The lawyers are also seeking records of phone calls Salam allegedly made with people involved when he allegedly threatened Jada.
Salaam’s request for a trial was denied, but he and the “Girls Trip” star have a hearing scheduled for Aug. 19.
Representatives for Jada, 54, and Will, 57, could not be reached for comment.
Salaam, who describes herself as Will’s “best friend of almost 40 years,” claimed that Jada approached Will with an entourage while they were at the Regency Calabasas Common on September 25, 2021.
According to the complaint, the two were attending Will’s birthday party at the time, and Salaam claims that Jada “became verbally aggressive, threatened (him) that if he continued to talk about personal things, he would end up missing or getting shot, and demanded that he sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).”
According to the filing obtained by Page Six, Salaam claimed that the actress continued to threaten him on the way to his car.
Salaam also claimed that Will dealt with a “retaliation campaign” after he infamously slapped Chris Rock for mocking Jada at the 2022 Oscars and failed to cooperate with crisis management.
Jada addressed the allegations in February, calling them “false, unsubstantiated, and created to gain attention as part of an ongoing public campaign of harassment directed against her and her family.”
The former Red Table Talk host also said Salaam was “obsessed” with his family and did not mention them by name during the alleged incident in 2021.
Additionally, she asked Salaam to pay $49,000 in attorney fees as the lawsuit continues.
