In another roundtable edition of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, the team began by discussing World Cup enthusiasm and apologizing to the Jazz for England’s heartbreaking loss to Argentina. Next, we dig into some pointed questions about the Emmys, including possible spoilers in the drama and comedy races (probably “The Pit” and “The Hux,” but there are some backup nominees), and look at some of the supporting races dominated by one show. Do all the candidates cancel each other out?

Among this week’s highlights, Clayton Davis, who missed last week’s episode, shared the biggest surprise of the nominations: “Without a doubt, ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’ is the only drama series nominated. It’s the first time in history that it’s been nominated once for outstanding drama series.” Meanwhile, ‘Nobody Wants This’ pretty much got it right in terms of comedy, but it did pick up a second-place nomination for music supervision.
Michael Schneider said that considering “The Pit” and “The Hucks” almost all of them were nominated, it doesn’t leave much room for other shows, hence why these one nominated series has so many. “That’s why standalone shows like ‘Nobody Wants This’ and ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’ don’t get more nominations,” he points out.
Meanwhile, the team is still surprised that Half Man only received one nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Richard Gadd. “A lot of those shows were dark,” Jazz Tankay points out. “Half-Man was very painful to watch. Then Chase Infinity was nominated, but Will was left out, and then Lord of the Flies was completely left out. It’s like people didn’t want a dark dystopia.”
So conventional wisdom holds that “The Pit” and “The Hux” are the clear frontrunners for drama and comedy. Is there a possibility of spoilers? “1000 percent,” Davis says. And he pulled this statistic as proof: When you’re the most nominated series, you win 56% of the time. (That seems low, right?)
