Anne Hathaway revealed during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy that The Princess Diaries 3 recently became a big hit after the script was rejected.
“I’ve been busy making baby No. 3, and that’s the substitute for finding out exactly when I’ll be able to make ‘Princess Diaries 3,'” Hathaway said.
“I would say there was a breakthrough in the story,” she added. “I think we’re on the right track. It’s like the script we were working on had to start over with this new direction. I don’t think this is the update that everyone was hoping for, but we’re all really happy that this is going to be the right thing.”
Production on the sequel to The Princess Diaries begins in 2022, with Adele Lim (Crazy Rich Asians, Raya and the Last Dragon) signed on to direct in 2024.
“This is a series that is loved by so many people, so we want to get the story right,” Lim told Variety at the Gold Gala Carpet in May.
Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, who became Queen of Genovia in the trilogy. Lim teased that fans of the original film can expect “a lot of fun returns” from other cast members.
Director Lim said in May that the filming and production schedule was still being finalized and a release date had not yet been announced.
The Princess Diaries was released in 2001, and a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, was released in 2004. The two films grossed a total of $300 million worldwide.
