Shakira, Shakira has opened up about the heartbreak she experienced at the end of 2021 after ex-Gerard Pique was accused of cheating on her.
“I always thought I was more fragile or weaker than life had proven me to be,” the artist told People in an interview published Wednesday.
The end of Shakira’s 11-year relationship in 2022 inspired the song “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” a year later.
The song details a retired soccer player’s alleged affair and was the Grammy winner’s first top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in more than a decade.
“It was pure catharsis. I needed to write about what I was going through without censorship,” Shakira mused.
As the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer said, songwriting is “like going to a smaller version, only cheaper.”
Shakira, who has sons Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11, with Pique, recalled relying on friends and family after the alleged indiscretion.
“Life sucks, but it’s worth living because your friends are there for you,” she said of experiencing heartbreak.

Shakira added that one must have an attitude of gratitude for life lessons.
“Even the people who have left a mark on you, because they only make us better,” she said.
After breaking up with the athlete, the mother of two moved on for the sake of her sons.
“Even if the world falls apart, you still have to wake up and pay the bills and still make breakfast and take the kids to school. Life has to go on,” Shakira elaborated to People magazine, adding, “Motherhood makes you stronger.”
“The moment I became a mother, I started looking at life in a different light. Not only are my children the best thing that ever happened to me, but I learn so much from them every day.”
Although there were rumors that she was with Miami Heat player Jimmy Butler and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Shakira is currently happy with the two boys in her life.
“I’m only thinking about raising my children. I’m not thinking about that at the moment,” Shakira admitted about a future relationship. “Maybe when they get older.”
The trio then relocated from Spain to Miami.
The Colombian star first met the soccer player on the set of the music video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” which became the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In 2022, Shakira and Pique announced to the world that they were separating.
“We are disappointed to confirm that we are separating,” the two said in a statement released by the pop star’s representatives at the time. “For the health of our children, which is our top priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
Months later, Shakira revealed how difficult the breakup was.
“It’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it and I’m in the public eye and our separation is not a normal separation,” she told Elle in September 2022.
In 2023, reports surfaced that the “Whenever, Wherever” songstress was “devastated” to learn that her husband was allegedly having an affair with his current girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí.
Rumors circulated at the time that Shakira realized her ex-girlfriend was cheating on her after she noticed her favorite jam missing from her fridge.
However, she later denied the authenticity of the rumor.
