Lady Grace Cavendish, a teenage Elizabethan spy, is set to return for season two.

The Lady Grace Mysteries, which stars Evie Coles as the world’s first female teenage detective working as Queen Elizabeth I’s personal spy, launched on the BBC’s children’s network CBBC and streaming platform iPlayer in April.

The 13-episode second season is scheduled to begin filming next month in the UK and Belgium.

In the first season, based on the children’s detective novel of the same name, Lady Grace teams up with the dashing Lord Osborne (Fintan Backard) and best friends Ellie (Carys John) and Massu (Rafael Alessandro) and discovers that the English court is filled with many mysteries.

In Season 2, Grace encounters Elizabeth’s rival, Mary, Queen of Scots, when she undertakes a dangerous mission to rescue Sir Francis Drake.

The synopsis reads, “Grace decides to unite Mary and Elizabeth, ending their feud and protecting the Queen forever.” “But she must navigate this new mission while dealing with the continuing challenges of teenage life, including a series of mysteries at court and developing feelings for Daniel (Ellie’s younger brother), who returns to court, which puts pressure on her romantic relationship with Lord Osborne.”

The cast for season 2 includes Amalie Ali (The Lazarus Project) as Daniel Bunting, Imogen Mackie Walker (Spellbound) as Mary Queen of Scots, Jack Forsyth-Noble (Doctor Who) as Sir Francis Drake, and Joy Tan as Lady Meadows.

Anna McCreery returns to lead the writing team alongside Vicki Lutas and Carissa Hamilton-Bannis. Writers Tasha Danraj, Scott Payne, Thabo Muratoshwa and Rebecca Lumsden will be joining the cast for season two.

Manager Louise Ní Fiannachta will also continue, with Jordan Hogg joining the team.

“Following a fantastic debut on CBBC and BBC iPlayer, The Lady Grace Mysteries is back for a second season as a fantastic co-viewing experience for families,” said Sarah Muller, BBC’s senior head of children’s commissioning for over 7s. “The blend of adventure, warmth and humor creates a show that connects viewers, sparks conversation and shares fun across generations. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners to deliver series that offer even more time for young viewers and their families to enjoy together.”

The series is produced by Cottonwood Media, Coolabi Productions and commissioned by ZDF Studios and BBC Children’s and Education. Federation Kids & Family and ZDF Studios will handle worldwide sales.

‘The Lady Grace Mysteries’ was first published in 2004 by Working Partners, part of the Coolabi Group.
