Oscar nominees Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell and Wagner Moura have been cast as three friends in “Art,” a new comedy based on French playwright Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning play that satirizes modern art, friendship and intellectual pretentiousness.
Coming to the Cannes market with legendary backing from director Patrick Waxberger, “193” is directed by Oscar-nominated Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles, known for “City of God,” “The Constant Gardener,” and “The Two Popes,” from a screenplay by two-time Oscar winner Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons,” “The Father”). CAA represents the rights of the United States.
“Art” follows three friends, Marc, Serge, and Yvan, and a ridiculously expensive pure white painting. It is purchased by one of his friends, and disagreements over what constitutes “art” spark a conflict within the group, revealing long-held grievances and interpersonal tensions.
The film will be produced by Charles Finch (Priscilla) and Tracy Seaward (Queen).
Hampton returns to “art” 30 years after translating the original 1994 play into English. The play was directed by Matthew Warchus and premiered in the West End in 1996 (starring Albert Finney, Tom Courtney and Ken Stott). “Art” has been revived numerous times since then, including a Broadway production in 2025 starring Bobby Cannavale, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris.
193 recently took part in another star project, the Western thriller The Rattle Creek Bandits. The film will be directed by Korean writer Park Chan-wook (No Other Choice, Old Boy, The Handmaiden), and will be adapted from an original screenplay by S. Craig Zahler (The Man Who Crossed the Concrete, The Bone Tomahawk). The cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, and Chinese star Tang Wei.
