Michael Weatherly is returning to play NCIS fan favorite Tony DiNozzo. Variety has learned that Weatherly is set to appear in Season 24 of the long-running CBS series that Weatherly helped fuel its popularity.
This is the second famous “NCIS” alum to return to the franchise in recent days. It was previously reported that Mark Harmon would reprise his role as Gibbs in the prequel series NCIS: Origins.
Weatherly originally played DiNozzo in a two-part backdoor pilot for JAG in 2003, before NCIS launched on CBS. He went on to appear on “NCIS” for 13 seasons and more than 300 episodes, as well as appearing as the character on several other shows in the series. She then appeared in a cameo role in Season 21 of NCIS, and later co-starred with Cote de Pablo in the Paramount+ spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
After leaving NCIS, Weatherly remained at CBS. He starred in the legal drama series ‘Bull’ for six seasons from 2016 to 2022. However, her appearance on the show was not without controversy, with actress Eliza Dushku accusing Weatherly of sexual harassment during filming.
The current “NCIS” cast includes Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law and Gary Cole. Stephen D. Binder, Chas. Floyd Johnson, Mark Harmon, Scott Williams, Christopher J. Wilde, Mark R. Schiltz, Jose Clemente Hernandez, Avery C. Drew, Marco Schnabel, and Donald P. Bellisario serve as executive producers. Produced by CBS Studios.
The Mothership shows remain a cornerstone of the CBS lineup, with “NCIS” scheduled to begin its 24th season on Tuesdays this fall and “Origins” in its third season. Apart from these two shows, CBS also airs “NCIS: Sydney” and is currently prepping “NCIS: New York” starring LL Cool J and Scott Caan.
Previous films in the series include NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Los Angeles (also starring LL Cool J), NCIS: Hawaii, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
