Sadie Sink will officially join the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this month, playing a mysterious role opposite Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Her role is so secretive that even though Sink has starred in Netflix’s Stranger Things for years and is a Gen Z superstar, she hasn’t even appeared in the film’s trailers or marketing footage. Internet sleuths are convinced that Sink is playing a young Jean Grey, ahead of Marvel’s introduction of the young band of X-Men into space, but she’s not missing out on anything.
“It’s not that hard, just not sharing secrets,” Sink told Nylon in a new cover story about keeping secrets in major franchises.
The publication charmingly adds: “Sometimes even she didn’t know the details[of Marvel roles]. Sink had worked with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the 2017 film The Glass Castle, so she was offered the role without an audition, but she also didn’t receive the script until she arrived in London.”
“I knew Marvel was a big company and had big brands, especially Spider-Man,” Sink added of the fuss surrounding the MCU debut. “I know there’s a huge fan base, but it feels really big. I think these blockbuster movies are a whole different beast.”
Luckily, Sink has co-star Holland to help him navigate Marvel fame. “It was interesting to step into that space and be a little bit of an outsider in that sense, but he couldn’t have been more welcoming and the entire staff was very welcoming. He was very relaxed and open, so I felt very at ease.”
Sink will appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, opposite returning stars Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon. Marvel heavyweights Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal will also appear as Hulk and Punisher, respectively.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will be released nationwide on July 31st.
