Marvel movie? For summer? groundbreaking.
Meryl Streep called Marvel movies “boring” while discussing the complexity of her role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The Oscar winner made the questionable comment on Friday’s Hits Radio Breakfast Show when an interviewer asked Streep about Miranda’s “softer side”, which is being highlighted in the new sequel.
“I think it gives you a realistic perspective,” the 76-year-old actress said. “I think we’re trending toward Marvelizing movies now.”
“We have bad guys and we have good guys,” she continued, “and it’s so boring.”
Streep pointed out that the real world isn’t like the battle of good versus evil that plays out in Marvel movies.
“What’s really interesting in life is that some heroes are flawed, while some villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths,” she explained.
“So that’s what I like about this (movie): It’s dirtier,” Streep concluded.
Streep isn’t the first big Hollywood star to take on Marvel’s shadow.
Big name filmmakers Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Quentin Tarantino have all pursued the genre, with Scorsese saying in 2019 that superhero movies “are not movies.”
The director of ‘Taxi Driver’ likened the MCU movies to a ‘theme park’.
Meanwhile, Tarantino blamed Marvel for Hollywood’s lack of movie stars, saying that in 2022 superhero characters will be overshadowed by the actors themselves.
As for Streep, he taunted Travis Kelce during the “The Devil Wears Prada 2” press tour.
In a recent featurette for the film, Streep randomly mentioned Kansas City Chiefs players when talking about the most difficult part of filming in Milan, Italy.
“The most difficult part of filming in Milan was walking on the cobblestones in high heels,” she said. “I’d love to see Travis Kelce do that.”
Travis, 36, responded to Streep’s shade on Wednesday’s episode of the “New Heights” podcast.
“I hope she doesn’t have any beef with me!” Travis joked while chatting with his brother and podcast co-host Jason Kelce, noting that he’s a “fan” of the Big Little Lies actress.
Travis then joked, “Oh, Meryl, you don’t know how good I am at walking in heels. Got it?”
But when Travis noticed that Taylor Swift’s soon-to-be husband had a “pointy” hem on his stilettos, Travis forced Streep to shut up about the questionable comment.
“I give credit where credit is due,” he said. “I don’t think I can do that, Meryl. Let you do it.”
Streep returns in The Devil Wears Prada 2 as Miranda, Runway magazine’s ruthless editor-in-chief, a role she originated 20 years ago.
She revealed in a recent interview that she initially refused to star in the 2006 cult film, but changed her mind after her salary was doubled.
“I knew it was going to be a hit, and I felt like they needed me,” she explained.
Streep’s co-stars Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt also reprized their roles in the new sequel.
