The Chronicles of Narnia, directed by Greta Gerwig, is scheduled for wide theatrical release in early 2027.
Previously scheduled for release on Thanksgiving 2026, the film is now scheduled to be released in theaters on February 12, 2027, and on Netflix on April 2, 2027. Trailers for The Chronicles of Narnia will begin hitting IMAX screens on February 10th.
The film is based on a book by C.S. Lewis and stars Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, and Emma Mackey.
Gerwig is writing and directing the fantasy adventure, which follows the series’ sixth novel, The Magician’s Nephew. This story serves as a prequel to “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and centers on the creation of the Chronicles of Narnia by the lion Aslan. Two children, Digory and Polly, first discover the “Forest Between Worlds” after their uncle gives the two friends a magic ring. Mackie plays Jadis, also known as the White Witch, the series’ antagonist. David McKenna (“Lord of the Flies”) plays Digory.
In an interview with Tudum, director Gerwig said, “Working with Netflix to bring this film to life has been extraordinary, and Imax continues to be a great partner. I can’t wait for people to see this film in theaters on February 12th and on Netflix on April 2nd.”
“When I first read ‘The Sorcerer’s Nephew’ as a child, I fell in love with the unlikely but totally wonderful concept of a cosmic lion bringing to life the world of Narnia,” said Gerwig. “I never thought I’d grow up to make films, but the idea of a universe built from music has always been in my mind, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime honor to be asked to imagine making it a reality. CS Because of Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that there was magic everywhere and that anyone could be caught up in the epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even an ordinary person like me…it changed me.”
IMAX said in a statement: “We got involved with The Chronicles of Narnia from the beginning to support Greta Gerwig and see her vision realized to its fullest extent on IMAX. The film’s postponement until 2027 means we can expand The Chronicles of Narnia to all theaters. There’s an opportunity for a big reveal, and we’re happy to support Greta and Netflix in pursuing that opportunity, and to help IMAX help facilitate it, in as many places as possible and for as many people as possible.” Experience what Greta has created in this special film. Especially since it debuted exclusively on Imax, where it was meant to be seen. ”
As previously reported, Mark Ronson, who worked with Gerwig on Barbie, will be composing the film’s music.
Netflix acquired the rights to the Chronicles of Narnia series in 2018 and announced plans to develop new films and TV shows set in the fantasy world. This multi-year agreement marks the first time that the rights to all seven novels are held by the same company. The previous three films, 2005’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, 2008’s Prince Caspian, and 2010’s The Voyage of the Treader, were adapted into films by 20th Century and Disney.
CS Lewis added: “It’s incredibly moving to see how deeply Greta Gerwig has embraced the world of CS Lewis and injected so much joy, heart and true love for the story into The Chronicles of Narnia. We’re so excited for audiences around the world to experience her vision and share the magic of Narnia with a whole new generation.”
