Prince George will follow in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, and attend Eton College in the autumn.
“Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will be joining Eton College from September this year,” a spokesperson told Page Six on Tuesday.
Prince William attended the prestigious school from 1995 to 2000, while Prince Harry joined in 1998 and graduated in 2003.
Eton College is an all-boys boarding school located in Berkshire, England. Founded in 1440, it is the largest boarding school in England.
Other notable alumni include 20 British Prime Ministers, including David Cameron and Boris Johnson.
George, who turns 13 next month, attended Lambrook School in Ascot with his two younger brothers, Princess Charlotte, 12, and Prince Louis, eight.
Before that, George and Charlotte went to Thomas’s Battersea in London.
Prince William, 44, is the next heir to the British throne after his father Charles III was crowned on May 6, 2023.
William’s time at Eton College prepared him for the throne by balancing his royal life with social activities.
While at school, the Prince of Wales joined an exclusive student organization known as Pop. He was also captain of the football team, which helped him develop early leadership skills.
Like his father, George is a direct line of succession to the British throne.
Prince William has always been conscious of his role in the monarchy, but he and his wife Kate Middleton are said to have “delayed” telling their eldest son that he would one day become King of England to protect his younger self.
“[Prince George]had a really normal childhood,” royal biographer Robert Lacy told People magazine last year.
“It shows special care and thoughtfulness,” Lacey said, adding: “It also says something about how William felt about the weight of the crown.”
Sources say the awarding of the title Prince of Wales to Prince George could be delayed if Prince William does not finish school before becoming the next heir.
“They probably want him to focus on having his freedom before giving him a royal title,” a palace source told the magazine.
“Prince William takes his role as father to a future king as seriously as he takes his role as a future king. That’s the key,” another royal expert told the magazine.
“His first priority is to make sure they enjoy it, not fear it.”
As for Middleton, she attended Marlborough College, a co-educational boarding school, from 1996 to 2000, before enrolling at the University of St. Andrews, where she met her future husband.
Prince William and Prince Middleton have agreed to raise their child in a more modern way than previous royals, but sending George to Eton College is the more traditional route.
In a break from royal tradition, George’s parents previously sent him to a co-educational full-time school, but now they are sending him to an all-boys boarding school.
