Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American distribution rights to Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film, “Bitter Christmas,” which recently enveloped the production.
This is the latest film in a film created by Almodóvar and released by Sony Pictures Classics, and was distributing the director’s English debut, “The Room Next Door,” in 2024, and the “Parallelly Mothers and Glory,” respectively, in 2023, his Academy Award-nominated feature, “Parallelly Mothers and Glory.”
“Bitter Christmas” is a Spanish drama (originally entitled “Amarganavidad”) that focuses on women who have become obsessed with the job they go to on their days off after losing their mother. She goes to Lanzaroth with her friend. Their experience on the island stands out in the story of screenwriters and filmmakers, exploring the intersection of life and art, as is the case with most Almodovar films.
The film stars Barbara Rennie, Leonardo Subaraglia, Aitana Sanchez-Gyon, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Curiard, Milena Sumit, Quim Gutiérrez and Rossy de Palma. The returning collaboration also stretches behind the camera, as both film production designer Antoxon Gomez and his composer Alberto Iglesias are working on “pain and glory” among other Almodovar projects. The film was filmed by Spanish director of photography Poe Esteb Baba.
The release date has not yet been announced as the film is in post-production under The Pain and Glory Editor, Teresa Font. The film is produced by Almodóvar’s brother and producer partner Agustín Almodóvar and his production company El Deseo. The deal was negotiated between Sony Pictures Classic and El Deseo on behalf of the filmmakers.
