Movie re-releases Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Amores Perros” (exclusive)

After 25 years, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s debut feature “Amores Perros” will be re-released in theaters as a movie. The film will be released in New York and Los Angeles on June 12th, and will expand nationwide on June 19th.

Amores Perros, which follows three characters whose lives come to an end after a fatal traffic accident, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 and was released in theaters on March 30, 2001. At the same festival, the film won the Critics’ Week Grand Prix, an achievement credited with launching Iñárritu’s international career. The film was also nominated for the 2001 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. “Amores Perros” stars Emilio Echevarria, Gael García Bernal, Vanessa Bauche and Goya Toledo.

The streaming service, film distributor, and production company first acquired the rights to a restored 4K version of the film during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered in the Cannes Classics selection. The Criterion Collection, Estudio México Films, and Altavista Films carried out the restoration, with color supervision by Iñárritu and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto.

“I can’t believe these wild dogs are still barking 25 years later,” Iñárritu said. “I’m so excited that Mubi is bringing ‘Amores Perros’ back to the screen, especially for the younger generation who didn’t have the opportunity to experience the movie in theaters. This movie changed the lives of all of us who made it.”

In the years since Amores Perros premiered, Iñárritu won five Academy Awards. The Mexican filmmaker won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay in 2015 for Birdman, Best Director in 2016 for The Revenant, and a Special Academy Award in 2017 for his virtual reality installation Carne y Arena.

The anniversary celebration of “Amores Perros” also includes “Sueño Perro,” an exhibit of unseen footage that opened last fall and is currently on display at LACMA until July 26, and an art book for the film published by Mac last fall.
