“Spaceballs” sequel is scheduled to be released in April 2027

Amazon MGM Studios plans to release Mel Brooks’ long-awaited sequel to Spaceballs next spring.

The sci-fi parody film, which marks star Rick Moranis’ return to acting, is scheduled for release on April 23, 2027, coinciding with the cult classic’s 40th anniversary.

Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet in the goofy intergalactic adventure, alongside Bill Pullman as Lone Star, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Weiner as Colonel Sanders. Brooks, 99, the coveted EGOT winner and hailed as one of the greatest comedy filmmakers in Hollywood history, also returns as Yoghurt, a yoga-esque presence.

Josh Gad will headline the new cast, which will also include Keiki Palmer, Anthony Carrigan and Bill’s son Louis Pullman. (“Every day was such a journey,” the younger Pullman told People magazine last year. “It felt like…a strange simulation. I couldn’t believe my good fortune.”)

“Spaceballs” cast and crew (clockwise from top): Director Josh Greenbaum, Bill Pullman, Kiki Palmer, Daphne Zuniga, George Weiner, Jeb Brody (producer), Taylor Stewie (associate producer) ), Austin Lee (Associate Producer), Benji Samit (Screenplay), Dan Hernandez (Screenplay), Adam Merrims (Line Producer/EP), Anthony Carrigan, Louis Pullman, Josh Gad and Rick Moranis.

Josh Greenbaum, known for “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” and “Will & Harper,” will direct the film from a screenplay by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. Like Brooks’ 1987 original, the sequel is expected to be inspired by popular sci-fi series such as Star Wars, Star Trek and Alien.

The sequel was revealed in a video shared by Brooks last summer. “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy,” Kroll writes. “But since then, there have been prequel trilogies, sequel trilogies, sequels to prequels, prequels to sequels, countless TV spinoffs, and movie spinoffs of TV spinoffs that are both prequels and sequels.” The video notes that other series such as Jurassic Park, Avatar, and Harry Potter have also continued to expand, concluding, “But in 38 years.” There has only been one “Spaceballs” so far. Until now…”

Plot details for the sequel, including the title, are being kept under wraps, but “the title is rumored to be the name of the film, and plot details are described as information about what will happen in the story,” Amazon MGM’s tongue-in-cheek synopsis reads. A previous logline also teased that the film would be “the second part of a sequel that is neither a prequel nor a reboot, but a franchise expansion film with reboot elements.”

Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Jeb Brody will also produce, along with Brooks (Brooksfilm Limited), Gad (Angry Child Productions), Greenbaum and Kevin Salter. Adam Merrims, Summitt and Hernandez will serve as executive producers.

Deadline first reported the news of the relationship.
