“Project Hail Mary” has been a huge hit with theatergoers, taking the No. 1 spot on its opening day Friday and earning more than $33.1 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Post hailed the sci-fi adventure film, starring Ryan Gosling as a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship far from Earth, as “a genuine summer blockbuster, perfect for mid-March.”
The Amazon-MGM Studios film, which reportedly cost $248 million to make, is on track to gross $77.1 million over the three-day weekend, according to Deadline.
In second place was the sci-fi animated comedy “Hoppers,” which grossed $5.4 million on its third Friday in theaters.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, also released on Friday, came in third with $3.8 million.
The horror-comedy, a sequel to 2019’s Ready or Not, “expands a mythology that didn’t need expanding,” The Guardian reported.
In fourth place was the Indian Hindi-language spy action thriller film “Dhulandar: The Revenge,” which grossed nearly $3 million.
Reminders of Him, a 2022 romance film based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name, came in fifth with $2.71 million.
Variety described the Universal film, released last Friday, as “a pleasantly restrained tearjerker about the passions of motherhood.”
