Thirty-eight years after the release of the cult classic comedy “Spaceballs,” the “Star Wars” parody is getting its own sequel. This time, however, original cast member Bill Pullman’s son Louis Pullman has joined the series, making it a family affair that he describes as a “dream come true.”
“Even though it just ended…every day was really a journey,” the Thunderbolts star said in an interview with People magazine. “It felt like…a strange simulation. I couldn’t believe my luck.”
According to IMDb, Pullman’s father Bill will reprise his 1987 role as renegade space pilot Lone Star in the new film, and Pullman will be joining as the new character Starburst. Spaceballs 2, scheduled for release in 2027, will reunite the father-son duo who co-starred in the 2017 Western film The Ballad of Lefty Brown on screen.
“We’ve always wanted to do it, but we didn’t know if we would ever get the chance,” Pullman continued. “So to do that in a movie like ‘Spaceballs 2,’ it was just like, ‘What kind of simulation is this…what kind of world are we in right now?'”
“38 years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy,” says the Spaceballs 2 announcement video shared by director Mel Brooks. “But since then, there have been prequel trilogies, sequel trilogies, sequels to prequels, prequels to sequels, countless TV spinoffs, and movie spinoffs to TV spinoffs that are both prequels and sequels.” The video goes on to point out other ever-expanding franchises, including “Jurassic Park,” “Avatar,” and “Harry Potter,” before concluding, “But in 38 years, there has only been one ‘Spaceballs.'” Until now…”
Josh Greenbaum directed the sequel, with Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad writing the screenplay. In addition to Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis will reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet after a hiatus from acting, and Daphne Zuniga will also return as Princess Vespa.
Most recently, Pullman co-starred with Amanda Seyfried as Bill Lee in The Testament of Ang Lee.
