Sophie Grégoire isn’t letting Katy Perry’s romance with her estranged husband Justin Trudeau “trigger.”
The Canadian speaker appeared as a guest on the Arlene Is Alone podcast earlier this week and broke her silence about her new relationship with her ex.
When host Arlene Dickinson asked Ms Grégoire, 50, how she “stays calm” amidst the publicity surrounding Trudeau’s romance with Mr Perry, she admitted it was having an effect behind the scenes.
“We’re all human and things affect us,” she confessed, adding that it’s “normal” to feel that way.
“You decide how you react to things. That’s why I chose to listen to music instead of noise.”
The former Canadian prime minister’s relationship with the pop star caused some emotions in Ms. Grégoire, but the former TV host emphasized that how she reacts is the only thing she can control, so she chose to remain respectful.
“I’m very aware that a lot of public things in the world can be triggers. We’re human, and it’s my decision to do with that. It’s my decision to become the woman I want to be through this,” she explained.
“Does that mean I don’t have emotions? Does that mean I don’t cry or scream or laugh? No!”
After all, Grégoire allows herself to feel every emotion, be it anger or disappointment, but always puts her and her estranged husband’s family first.
The former couple were married from 2005 to 2023 and co-parent three children: 18-year-old Xavier, 16-year-old Ella-Grace, and 11-year-old Hadrian.
“We live separate lives, but we live as a family,” Gregoire said. “And I think couples need two people to untangle them.”
“It’s not always easy to live, but it’s very adult,” she added.
Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 41, were first linked in July when they were spotted on a dinner date in Montreal.
The following month, there were reports that their relationship had already “cooled down” as Trudeau disliked all the media attention their date had garnered.
But last month, the pair were proven everyone wrong when a naughty photo of them making out on Perry’s yacht was leaked. By the end of October, they made their debut as a couple at the musician’s 41st birthday celebration in Paris.
