Aaron Paul’s plans for video game season 2

AdHoc Studio’s choose-your-own-adventure-style video game “Dispatch” began its final two deliveries on Wednesday, giving closure to the superhero workplace comedy for the more than 1 million players who purchased a copy. Of course, it’s difficult to talk about specific spoilers about the multiple possible endings, given that the path players choose will affect the story they get.

But no matter what path he chooses, Aaron Paul (who appears in the game as the voice of Robert Robertson, aka Mecha Man) told Variety that there will be more opportunities. That was before “Dispatch” launched its first two episodes on Oct. 22 to rave reviews and sales.

“Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. There’s always room for good storytelling,” Paul said in an interview last month. “I think it could end up perfect here. But also, the door is definitely a little bottled up, certainly more than that. So, we’ll take a look.”

Throughout its eight-episode first season, the video game “Dispatch” follows a dysfunctional team of misfit heroes as they strategize who to send to emergencies across the city while balancing office politics, relationships, and their own quest to become heroes. Robert Robertson is the central character as a dispatch operator who is forced to give up his career as a mechanical superhero due to damage to his suit.

Paul said the role was challenging as it was his first time acting in a video game and he went through several different storyline options during recording.

“Especially in his case — and without giving too much away — his relationships with a lot of the characters are very different depending on the decisions that gamers make,” Paul said. “That was a little complicated for me, and I think that’s why it took so long to record. But it was an interesting challenge because you just tell such different stories and you have to react accordingly.”

But interestingly, Paul says at the end of episode 8 of “Dispatch” that he doesn’t actually have a desired ending for Robert.

“Actually, I don’t know? No, I really don’t know. They’re all very interesting and I think audiences will want to see more wherever they land. This is unique,” Paul said. “I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s definitely a path towards the end where you can end up in a completely different place. It’s like, God knows where it leads, and that’s really interesting.”
