Netflix has dropped the puck on a new high school hockey series from “White Lotus” star Michelle Monaghan and producer Shawn Levy.
The untitled eight-episode drama takes place in South Dorothy, a working-class town in Minnesota. There, high school hockey teams have been sending players to the NHL and winning championships for decades under legendary coach “Sully” Sullivan. When a bus accident kills Sally and several players, the town turns to his widow, Harper Sullivan (Monaghan), to mentor a new team of disfigured young men. According to the logline, “What unfolds is a hopeful, unforgettable story of a team of underdogs who come together to revitalize a city, reclaim their way of life, and transform their shared grief into an unstoppable superpower.”
The series is created by Nick Naveda (“Words on the Bathroom Walls,” “The Lovely Wife”) and will be showrun by Bridget Bedard (“Love Life,” “Ramy,” “Transparent”). It’s been described as heartwarming and emotional, perhaps in the vein of “Friday Night Lights” on ice.
Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool & Wolverine) served as executive producer for Levy’s 21 Laps banner alongside Dan Levine and Robert Atwood. Trey Edward Schultz (“Waves”) will also serve as executive producer and direct the first two episodes. The producer is Moera Aiuchi. The project is part of an overall deal between 21 Laps and Netflix.
“For as long as I can remember, I have held South Dorothy and its people in my heart,” Naveda said in a statement. “It’s a dream come true to finally be able to bring that world to life with our grizzly bear family on 21 Laps and Netflix. We have so much love and gratitude to our partners for this opportunity and for their continued support over the years.”
Levy added, “This show has been around for a long time since “21”. “Nick and Bridget have built a world and ensemble of characters that are grounded in authenticity and big heart, which naturally attracted the incredible talent of director Trey Edward Schultz and star Michelle Monaghan. With its visceral sports background and deeply human story, we can’t wait to bring this show to the world.” Audience. ”
Monaghan is repped by Gersh, Anonymous Content and Sloan Offer.
