Taskovsky Films has acquired Mexican-Dutch filmmaker Diego Gutierrez’s feature documentary “The Shipwrecked,” which will have its world premiere in IDFA International Competition.
“The Shipwrecked” follows a disappointed filmmaker who returns to his native Mexico and navigates the story of ordinary people faced with extraordinary circumstances. These stories range from a church restorer preserving the past, to a young biologist in love, to a young man who turns a luxury resort into a vegetable garden, to a farmer struggling to make ends meet.
The film “celebrates small acts of courage and resilience in countries facing challenges of inequality, corruption and climate change,” according to a statement.
“We are excited to bring ‘Shipwreck’ to audiences around the world,” said Irena Taskovski, Head of Acquisitions at Taskovski Film. “The film’s focus on Mexico’s social inequality, ecological threats and cultural heritage makes it both topical and cinematic, making it perfect for festivals and broadcasters looking for an urgent story told with emotion and skill.”
Carmen Cobos, producer of Cobos Films, said: “Working with Taskovsky Films ensures that Diego’s intimate story reaches an audience concerned with pressing social and environmental issues. The film’s combination of micro-personal stories and universal questions about hope and responsibility makes it truly unique.”
The screenplay is by Gutierrez, Keith Reininx, and Tamara Vroomans. Edited by Albert Marx and Gutierrez. Cinematography was by Gutierrez and Miguel Labastida. The producers are Cobos and Rijninks.
Co-producer is VPRO. The film is supported by the Dutch Film Fund and the CoBO Fund. In the Netherlands, the film is distributed by Cinema Delicatessen.
