“KPop Demon Hunters 2” aiming for release in 2029

Hunter/x is returning to our screens…but the girl group’s reunion tour may take a while.

As first reported by Bloomberg, Netflix and Sony have signed a deal for another KPop Demon Hunters movie, with the animated musical sequel set to be released in 2029. Animated films take a long time to make, so there can be a four-year gap between productions. Of course, release date plans are subject to change depending on the film’s production schedule.

Netflix and Sony declined to comment.

KPop Demon Hunters is a fantasy adventure about a fictional K-Pop girl group who use music to protect the world from demons, developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation. As part of Sony and Netflix’s licensing deal, “KPop Demon Hunters” was distributed directly to Netflix, making it the streamer’s most popular movie of all time. Meanwhile, three of the original songs, “Golden,” “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” are mainstays on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and could be nominated for future Grammy Awards.

“KPop Demon Hunters” has become such a huge phenomenon that Netflix, which hates theatrical releases, has decided to release the sing-along version of the movie in theaters at fan events in August and October. In its first go-around, “KPop Demon Hunters” grossed approximately $18 million in two days. Then, around Halloween, the film raked in between $5 million and $6 million, which is remarkable considering it’s been widely available on streaming for several months.

“Maggie Kang, who co-directed KPop Demon Hunter and co-directed the film with Chris Appelhans, has expressed her desire for a sequel for many years.

“We’ve been preparing a lot for potential backstories,” Kang told Variety in July. “Obviously, there are a lot of unanswered questions and unexplored areas. There’s only so much a movie can tell in 85 minutes, so we had to do that.”
