Keri Russell’s go-to look bears a striking resemblance to a fictional astronaut – at least that’s what her partner Matthew Rhys thinks.
While her character Kate Wyler in The Diplomat is known for rocking power suits and classy dresses, Russell, 49, exclusively told us that she tends to gravitate toward something a little more comfortable in everyday life.
“Normally I don’t like sequined dresses. Some people find them powerful, but I don’t,” she admits. “I think I tend to want to feel more comfortable and cool than beautiful and sexy.”

What would an actress named Felicity reach for instead? “Probably some kind of jacket,” Russell explains. “My guy Matthew always says, like, I’ve been wearing the same leather jacket over and over for years and I’ve been obsessed with wearing these chinos, and he’s like, ‘Oh, Sam Shepard from The Right Stuff again?'” And I’m like, “Yeah, yeah.” ”
In fact, Russell has made it clear that she would rather embody Shepard’s character in the 1983 sci-fi film than deal with the challenges of wearing a tight dress.
“There have been millions of times when I’ve had to attend an event, or stay late at an awards show, and I’ve traveled alone and I can’t take back what I’ve put on my back,” she emphasizes. “Deborah Kahn, who writes our show, we were in Washington, D.C., I think it was a correspondents dinner, and it was late. I was so tired. I was just about to turn off the light and there was a knock on the door and I thought, ‘Who’s knocking on me? That’s creepy.'”
However, when she opens the door, she finds Khan standing there, unable to break free from the constraints of her dress. “‘Can you zip it up?'” Russell recalls her asking. “We’ve all been there.”

As well as revealing that he occasionally comments on Rhys, 50,’s predictable fashion choices, Russell – who has nine-year-old son Sam with his long-term partner – also revealed he would “love to join” The Diplomat if given the chance.
“But he’s pretty busy with a million other things,” she added. “He’s got five other jobs or something. He’s going to announce two new things, so let’s take a look.”
