rundown
Hailey Bieber debuted an upgraded engagement ring last summer. It was an elongated oval engagement ring designed by Lorraine Schwartz. Hailey revealed that it was only one carat larger than her original 6-10 carat oval ring. The jeweler spoke to ELLE about how Hailey’s ring was made, its estimated value of more than $1 million, and how her ring sparked a larger jewelry trend among her customers.
Last summer, Hailey Bieber admitted she upgraded the oval engagement ring Justin Bieber gave her in 2018. Contrary to rumors, the new version designed by Lorraine Schwartz is less than 10 carats larger than the original ring. “Actually, it’s only a carat bigger. It’s just elongated,” she clarified to W magazine about the diamond’s shape.
Here, a jewelry expert breaks down what you need to know about her sparkler and how it’s still shaping engagement ring trends.
Haley’s original oval engagement ring was custom designed in a few weeks.
Haley’s first oval engagement ring was designed by Solow & Company and ranged in size from 6 to 10 carats, and jeweler Jack Solow told PEOPLE that he only had “a few weeks” to create the custom piece.
Thoreau talked about how Justin was involved in the process. “Justin was involved in selecting the diamond because I sent the video to his team,” Solow said. “I know him through[then-manager]Scooter Braun. When it came time to look for a ring, Justin asked Scooter and said, ‘I’m ready to ask questions.’ And he said, ‘There’s only one place to go, ask Jack.'”
Thoreau added, “Ultimately, Justin wanted something that could gracefully accentuate Haley’s beautifully shaped hands. We settled on an oval stone that was extraordinary in its length and grace.”
Her upgraded ring has an elongated oval shape to make the diamond appear larger.
Hailey herself admitted that her upgraded ring is just one carat larger than her first ring.
“The most notable feature of her diamonds is their elongation,” Steph Mazuela, a New York jeweler who founded her eponymous brand of custom engagement rings, tells ELLE. “There is a trend towards Moval, a term that refers to very elongated oval cuts, which have a higher length-to-width ratio than typical oval-cut diamonds. Because of their larger surface area, more elongated stones often appear larger than their carat weight would indicate. Elongated stones are very elegant on the finger and often appear larger than diamonds of standard proportions.”
Mazuela shared an example with ELLE, pointing out that the top elongated oval diamond has a lower carat weight than the oval diamond below it.
The ring is believed to be between 7 and 11 carats and is estimated to be worth more than $1 million.
Considering Hailey’s original engagement ring was between 6 and 10 carats and she said her new ring was only one carat larger, the upgraded ring will likely be between 7 and 11 carats.
Of course, it looks much bigger in the photo. Lauren Bock, founder and CEO of Hella Fine Jewelry, told ELLE: “Her new diamond looks like 8 to 10 carats to me. It’s a very elongated oval, longer and thinner than the average oval diamond on the market. Really elongated ovals are hard to find. I think this is a special cut.”
Mazuela agreed that 7 to 11 carats seems accurate, noting that the elongated shape makes determining the exact weight difficult.
Ann Grimmett, vice president of merchandising at Jared Jewelers, agreed with this estimate, saying, “It’s difficult to gather the exact carat size, but it’s probably somewhere between 8 and 10 carats.”
As for the value of the work, both Mazuela and Bock said it could be worth more than $1 million. “We estimate Haley’s ring to be in the seven-figure range, probably between $1 million and $1.5 million, depending on the exact grade and quality of the stone,” Mazuela said.
Bock cited a similar number, saying, “Assuming the diamond was mined and of very high quality, this ring could easily cost more than $1 million.”
The ring setting is made to protect the large diamond.
There’s a practical design behind Beaver’s gold setting.
“Her engagement ring has a clean, minimalist aesthetic that is perfect for her style. It has NSEW (north, south, east, west, also known as compass) claw prongs and a classic semi-circular band that is approximately 3mm wide. This is heavier than the average engagement ring band, but very sensible considering the durability of a ring with such a large diamond. These NSEW The claw prongs add a little twist to the ring, but otherwise it’s very nice,” Bock explained. Classic. NSEW prongs are requested by many customers because they allow you to add a unique design element while maintaining a simple and elegant look. As far as you can tell from the photo, this ring is further away from her finger than the original engagement ring, so she could stack it with a straight wedding ring. ”
Mazuela agreed, saying, “Her diamond is set with compass-style prongs, giving the ring a modern edge compared to her previous ring, which had prongs at the corners instead. I especially like that the band on Hailey’s new ring is a little thicker than her previous ring. Large diamonds require the right construction to ensure they are easy to wear and safe.”
Haley’s ring helped popularize elongated oval diamond rings and upgrade rings for couples.
Mr. Mazuela and Mr. Bock noted that Haley’s ring spurred a growing trend in elongated diamond rings.
“Hailey’s ring definitely sparked a shift toward larger, more elongated engagement rings,” Mazuela told ELLE, adding, “To make a trendy ring style permanent and truly yours, it’s important to work with a jeweler who can capture the essence of the inspiration while tailoring the design to reflect your personal style.”
Bock added, “Hailey is such a trendsetter. When she got engaged in 2018, she popularized the oval engagement ring as a trendy shape. More and more people are attracted to long, skinny shapes like elongated ovals and marquise cuts, so her new, more elongated oval engagement ring is right on trend.”
Nicole Wegman, founder and CEO of Ring Concierge, speaks more broadly about the oval trend, stating, “Oval diamonds are one of the most requested shapes for engagement rings because their elongated silhouette is timeless and often appears larger than their carat weight.”
Like the Beavers, she emphasized the importance of working with a professional jeweler to carefully balance the stone’s proportions, “to avoid the so-called ‘bow tie effect,’ where the center appears darker. Ovals are a shape that truly highlights a jeweler’s craftsmanship, as every detail of the design, from the prongs to the band, should enhance, rather than compete with, the natural elegance of the stone.”
Meanwhile, Grimmett said ring upgrades aren’t a new trend, saying, “But it’s certainly true that people are doing it earlier than they used to be. She also says that women can upgrade the entire look of their engagement rings and bands, and sometimes use multiple rings so they can be replaced.” I also see them holding rings. I also add other stacking bands to stack them on top and bottom of my fingers and across my hands, or to turn them into a variety of engagement rings. Typically, the original wedding ring remains the same, and other pieces are built up to create new ones. Look. “
Bock pointed out that the upgrade ring doesn’t necessarily resemble Haley’s either. “We work with a lot of couples who have their diamond reset for a new engagement ring, but it’s less common for Hailey to buy a new diamond to update her ring,” she explained. “Often our clients decide to update their rings as part of a milestone wedding anniversary, such as five or 10 years. They are usually looking for a more practical design, or their style has changed and they want to update their design.”
Mazuela said she believes “resetting engagement rings is becoming more and more common.” “More and more clients are looking to reset their traditional engagement rings into more unique, sculptural and personalized settings. There’s magic in recycling previously-loved materials and creating something new that speaks to who you’ve grown over time.”
