Perry and ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom announced their split in July. Later that month, the singer went on a date with Prime Minister Trudeau in Montreal. She was hesitant to date anyone, but Trudeau pursued her because he believed in their potential.
A source close to Perry told People today that Trudeau’s efforts have really paid off, saying, “She’s focused on touring and Justin has literally made a real effort to meet her where she is. She’s very happy. He’s committed and he’s shown that he values his time with her. It’s clear he values the connection and so does Katy. She’s in a great position.”
The source added: “Dating Justin was something she never imagined, but she is truly enjoying this amazing turn of her life.” She “loved” his trip to Paris for her birthday, the source said.
A second source detailed how Perry and Trudeau are balancing their blossoming relationship with their careers and family life. (Both are raising children with their ex-husbands.) Sources also emphasized that Perry didn’t really envision this for herself.
“They both have busy schedules, but they make time for each other and have a very strong bond,” the source explained. “Katie never expected to fall in love with someone so quickly, but Justin ticked all the boxes. He has a great sense of humor, is charming, and treats her with respect.”
Two weeks ago, a source told PEOPLE how things have changed in the months since Trudeau and Perry began their talks. “When she first hung out with Justin, she had no intention of dating, but they kept in touch,” the source said. “They had a lot of common interests and a lot to talk about, but Katie was going through so much that she couldn’t even think about dating at the time.”
But Trudeau has been “pursuing her ever since[the date in Montreal],” the source said. “He flew to California to meet her during a break from his tour. They connected easily. She finds him attractive. He’s very respectful.”
