Tom Hanks is a big fan of his son Chet.
The “Cast Away” actor attended a performance by Chet’s band, Something Out West, at the Stagecoach Musical Festival 2026 in Indio, Calif., on Saturday.
A social media video taken by festival attendee Keren Ashli shows Tom smiling and singing along to the band’s song “You Better Run” inside the Toyota Music Den.
Tom, 69, was dressed casually with a tan jacket, blue jeans and a hat.
Ashli told People magazine that she was about 10 minutes into the show when she realized she was next to the Oscar-winning actor.
“I recognized him and was honestly surprised,” she said. “I couldn’t believe he was standing next to me. He was enjoying watching his son.”
Ashli said she finally “plucked up the courage” to go up to Tom and tell him she was a fan, and that he was “very kind and kind in return.”
She also said, “After the show, several more members of the crowd noticed him and he was very kind to take some pictures with the fans.”
The music video for Chet’s band’s song ‘You Better Run’, released last year, pays homage to Tom’s beloved 1994 film ‘Forrest Gump’.
In one scene, 35-year-old Chet sits on a bench with a box of chocolates, and Tom joins him in staring at his son’s familiar attire.
Additionally, the band performs on a shrimping boat named Jenny. Jenny is the name of the character played by Robin Wright in the movie.
Chet’s parents are Tom and Rita Wilson. The couple have son Truman, 30, and Tom is also father to son Colin, 48, and daughter EA, 43, with ex Samantha Lewis.
Chet formed Something Out West with his friend Drew Arthur.
According to their website, the country music group started in California when the pair “became roommates at a pivotal time and embarked on a journey to sobriety that sparked a deep friendship and creative partnership.”
Chet is also an actor, appearing in Kate Hudson’s Netflix comedy series Running Point.
In February 2025, Chet spoke about his music and acting career in an interview with Esquire magazine.
“Ultimately, I consider myself an artist, and acting and music are just two different mediums to express myself,” he said.
“I’ve been working on this music for a long time,” Chet added. “So I want to tour and ultimately let the world hear this music.
