Supergirl’s box office prospects are bleak after star Millie Alcock sparked a backlash after she mocked Christian’s father.
The DC superhero movie, which opens June 26, is expected to gross between $47 million and $65 million in its opening weekend, and between $107 million and $181 million in all domestic screenings, according to Box Office Theory.
Directed by James Gunn, the film reportedly has a budget of around $170 million, but marketing costs are estimated to be over $75 million, for a total of around $245 million.
To break even, “Supergirl” would need to earn about $425 million worldwide, far less than the $350 million worldwide estimate from Box Office Theory.
By comparison, Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet, opened in July 2025 domestically for $125 and ended its theatrical run with $618 million worldwide. It cost approximately $325 million to produce and promote.
The predicted box office crisis for Supergirl isn’t helped by the stiff competition the film faces.
Disney’s “Toy Story 5” was released a week earlier, on June 19th, and is expected to earn between $130 million and $160 million at the domestic opening box office, with total domestic box office revenue between $465 million and $600 million.
Minions and Monsters will be released in theaters just five days after Supergirl, and is expected to gross between $100 million and $125 million domestically over its opening weekend.
Furthermore, the live-action version of “Moana” will be released on July 10th, and experts predict that the domestic box office revenue will be a huge 100 million to 200 million dollars.
In “Supergirl,” Alcock, 26, stars as Clark Kent’s superpowered cousin.
The supporting cast includes Corren Sweat, Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.
In a recent interview with Variety, Alcock hit back at online critics, suggesting the hateful comments were coming from faceless social media users, including conservative men.
“It comes from a lot of people who don’t have pictures on their profiles and are burner accounts,” Alcock said. “Or someone’s name followed by ‘Christian, father of four children,’ is so funny to me.”
The “House of the Dragon” star added, “But I mean, who really cares what anyone thinks? If you’re offending the right kind of people, you’re fine.”
Mr Alcock’s comments faced further criticism online.
“So fathers are going to take their daughters to this movie after being insulted? I know not. And my daughter loved Supergirl,” one person tweeted last week.
Another fan said, “Pointing out that critics are good fathers is not a winning message.”
Another source added, “No one will watch this movie now.”
Some fans likened Alcock to “Snow White” actress Rachel Zegler. Zegler sparked backlash last year when he described the original 1937 film as “outdated,” called Prince Charming a “stalker,” and made anti-Donald Trump posts on social media.
Zegler’s version of the classic fairy tale bombed at the box office, but many attributed it to her comments.
“Supergirl” will be released in theaters on June 26th.
