Dave Matthews, lead singer of the Dave Matthews Band, slammed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as “bastards” during Friday’s concert.
“I don’t understand why we have to kill each other, why we give people excuses,” Matthews said. “There’s always a reason why we should kill each other. They tell their kids, and when they grow up, they use that word. What’s wrong with us? I don’t know why we’ve lost our way. That’s how I feel. But maybe we’ve always been like this. We just got better at making things that kill each other,” he said in a viral video clip from the concert.
“Anyway, I was going to say his name. I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget. This young man who was killed by ICE in Houston, Texas — well, he’s an old man, but we’re all young — was this father and grandfather. And they say he’s not even the man — he’s not even the man they were looking for. Well, then don’t pull the trigger, you son of a bitch.”
“So what I wanted to say is, I’m sorry if those words offend his family or friends or the community, but they only offend me anyway, so I want to send this in memory of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who was killed by ICE in Houston a few days ago,” he added.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an undocumented Mexican immigrant, was shot and killed in Houston after he allegedly tried to ram a U.S. ICE officer during an operation, authorities announced Tuesday. An ICE spokesperson told FOX News Digital that ICE officers were attempting to conduct a traffic stop around 6:50 a.m.
Araujo attempted to flee from an ICE officer when he “used a weapon on his vehicle in an attempt to run the officer over, resulting in the officer firing his weapon in self-defense.”
Matthews has criticized ICE agents before. He made the remarks in an Instagram video after activist Renee Good was killed during an altercation with ICE officers in Minneapolis in February.
“I don’t want to spend our tax dollars on ICE and masked thugs roaming the streets terrorizing communities and tearing families apart. We should look out for each other. We should look out for each other. We should house the homeless. We shouldn’t be throwing people to the ground,” he said.
“That made me think of Renee Nicole Good,” he continued. “Killed in front of his fellow citizens in Minneapolis, murdered in the streets. No matter what narrative this administration is trying to sell us, we can see the video.”
Fox News Digital reached out to ICE for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
