Shanghai Film Festival announces Golden Cup competition films

The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival has announced the competition lineup for the Golden Cup Awards across five categories: fiction, documentary, animation, and short film. The festival will be held from June 12th to 21st.

The main competition will feature 12 titles from 15 countries and regions, all of which will be released for the first time in the world. Among the nominees is Indonesian director Ismail Basbeth’s “My Own Last Supper.” “Night of Blindness”, Turkish-German co-production, directed by Rais Çelik. and Yassin El Idrissi’s Moroccan work Halima. Two films that represent China are Zhong Kaifeng’s “Atlantic Rhapsody” and Liu Xiaoyang’s “The Great Skull.” Secret in the Box, a Mainland-Hong Kong co-production directed by Frankie Tam Gong-yuen, is also in the running, along with Belgian film Iluminada directed by Nicolas Rincon Gilles, Brazilian-British co-production Luiza’s Desert directed by Alain Minas, and Russian film Sea Sons directed by Daniil Merkulov. Germany appeared twice in the lineup with Josef Brundle’s The Super Soldier and Susanne Heinrich’s The Wretched Mother, the latter of which shared its world premiere at the Munich Film Festival. Louis Godbout’s Canadian work “The parking Spot” concludes this section.

The contest’s chief judge will be Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai. The seven panel members also include Tunisian producer Dora Bouscha, Chinese director Guan Fu, Kyrgyzstan director Akhtan Alim Kubat, Mexican screenwriter/director/producer Fernanda Valadez, Chinese actor Xin Zilay, and Georgian director Der Kulumbegashvili.

The Asian Emerging Directors section spotlights debut and second features by Asian directors, bringing together 12 titles from across the continent and beyond. The Indo-German co-production “Hunter’s Moon,” directed by Ridham Janve, is in competition with “Nine Temples to Heaven,” directed by Sompot Chidgasongponse, which premiered at Cannes, and “No Good in Sight: A Story,” directed by Kazakh director Alibi Mukushev. In addition to the Bangladeshi-German co-production “The Blind Girl and the Elephant” directed by Ishtiyaq Ahmad Jihad, the Turkish film “About the Mother” by Bushra Bulbül, the Jordanian-Saudi co-production “Boomah” directed by Zaid Abu Hamdan, and the Kyrgyz film “The Skylark” directed by Nargiza Dotyeva are among the world premieres in this section. In addition to the Mainland-Hong Kong co-production “Dog Day Evening,” directed by Mak Ting Hsu, China offers four other titles: “Cassowary” (Zhang Hanyi), “Her First Taste” (Gong Yiwen) and “No Hard Feelings” (Liu Shichuan). Director Wang Bo’s “Strangers in the Mountain” also participates.

The chairman of the Asian New Talent jury is Singaporean director Anthony Chen, Indonesian director and screenwriter Camila Andini, Chinese director and screenwriter Liu Jiaying, Kazakh director and screenwriter Farkat Sharipov, and Taiwanese actor Wen Chi.

The documentary competition will feature five world premieres. The Chinese film “Notes Unheard” directed by Gu Yun will compete with the Chilean documentary “The Tiger of the East” (Jorge Acevedo), the Spanish film “Benigno” (David Bote), the North Macedonian-Croatian-Slovenian co-production “Ruins” directed by Jelena Chemerska, and “The Wheel of Forgotten Dreams” directed by Serbian directors Milos Ljubomirovic and Danilo Lazovic. Bulgaria and Croatia.

The animation section has five functions. Brazil’s Amadeo, co-directed by Brenda Ligia and Edu Felistok, will compete with Linda Hanbeck’s Scandinavian co-production Dante, Ronnie Ghani’s Indonesian production Garuda, French films Lucie Lost (Olivier Claire) and Winnipeg, a Seed of Hope. A Spanish-Chilean-Argentine co-production directed by Helio Guiroga and Beñat Beitia.

The 28th SIFF is led by the China Film Administration and hosted by China Media Group in cooperation with the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
