Serena Williams proudly showed off her cotton artwork at her Florida home before calling her hotel in New York City to display her cotton plant decorations.
In the mansion north of Miami, Williams and her husband, Alexis O’Hanian, hold a sculpture of Radcliffe Bailey, created in 2013 by the late artist, titled “Monument for a Promise.”
The steel and concrete structure depicts donkeys carrying the trunk, standing on a stack of cotton with each Art Neuie.
The outlet noted that Bailey “assembled influential works” throughout his career, using “the objects he collected within the continuum of black history.”
“The transport of his family’s archives, Georgian Red Clay, Tarp and African figurines was one of many elements that appeared in his art, primarily in the form of a sculpture facility, some of which were on a monumental scale,” Artnews reported in November 2023.
Williams, 44, spoke about displaying the “Memorial for Promise” sculpture in her foyer and formal living room.
“When you enter, it’s like walking into an art gallery,” the retired tennis superstar gushed at the time. “It’s my favorite part of the house. It’s so unique. I’ve never seen anything like that.”
Ohanian – Williams shares his daughters Olympia, 8, and Adila, 2, on Instagram, also posted about “The Memorial for the Promise.”
In October 2020, 42 Reddit co-founders uploaded photos of Olympia looking up at the sculpture.
Almost five years later, Williams took him to an Instagram story, filming himself in the hallways of an unidentified Manhattan hotel.
“How do you feel about cotton as an ornament?” she asked her followers and panned for the arrangement. “Personally, it doesn’t feel good for me.”
Picking a cotton ball from the branches, the former athlete said “it feels like cotton, manicure remover.”
