“Project Hail Mary,” the film adaptation of Andy Weir’s best-selling novel, is finally available for streaming. The film will be released on MGM+ on June 18th. The most affordable way to stream this movie is with a free trial of Prime Video’s MGM+ add-on.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative duo behind films such as The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed the film from a script by Drew Goddard. This is Goddard’s second film with Weir, following his 2015 film The Martian. When asked about working with the directorial duo, Goddard said they were “successful at finding the humanity in these crazy characters,” which is what the film needed.
This sci-fi thriller follows Ryan Gosling’s Ryland Grace as he embarks on a near-impossible space mission with one simple goal: save the world. Gosling’s co-stars include Sandra Hüller as Eva Strutt and puppeteer James Ortiz as Rocky, the adorable alien who accompanies Grace on her space adventures.
“Project Hail Mary” earned $80.5 million at the box office when it was first released in March, and went on to gross $680 million worldwide, making it Amazon Studios’ biggest opening ever, previously held by “Creed III.” The film became the year’s biggest debut until it was dethroned by Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Less than a month after the film’s release, NASA launched its own mission into space using Artemis II. According to NASA, the purpose is to test how the spacecraft will perform in deep space, and as a bonus, it will be the farthest a crew has ever traveled from Earth, breaking the previous record set by the Apollo 13 mission. Ahead of the launch, the four crew members watched “Project Hail Mary,” and Gosling later congratulated them in a video.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Andy Weir said that he “might write a sequel someday,” but he is not currently working on it. But while he has ideas for expanded storylines, nothing is “enough to execute” yet.
