Mike Vrabel felt “embarrassed” and “discomforted” when he was photographed hugging and holding hands with sports journalist Deanna Russini for the first time, according to a body language expert.
Susan Constantine exclusively told Page Six that Vrabel was “true and honest” during Tuesday’s press conference, noting that the Patriots coach’s “swaying from side to side to reporters is consistent with causing discomfort.”
A body language expert said Vrabel had “eyes cast down” and a dark expression on her face when she told the room that she had to have “difficult conversations” with family and colleagues.
Konstantin detected “genuine sadness” in Vrabel’s eyebrows.
During the press conference, Vrabel pressed his lips together, which Konstantin said was indicative of his “emotional restraint” as the pitch of his voice was “emphasizing an important point.”
She said there was no indication that he wasn’t being truthful, but he definitely seemed “uncomfortable and uncomfortable.”
The New England Patriots head coach and former NYT reporter, both married, were seen holding hands and hugging each other at a luxury resort in Arizona in a photo published by Page Six earlier this month.
During Tuesday’s press conference, Vrabel, who has two sons with his wife Jen Vrabel, whom he married in 1999, broke his silence about “private and personal matters.”
The NFL head coach said he had “difficult conversations with people I care about, including my family, organization, coaches, and players,” but that those conversations were “positive and productive.”
“We never want our actions to negatively impact the team,” he said in part. “We never want to be a distraction. There are comments and questions that I have answered for and with the team, but we will keep them private and to ourselves.”
Vrabel previously told Page Six that the March photo “represents a completely innocent interaction” and that “any suggestion otherwise is laughable.”
Meanwhile, Ms Russini, who has two sons with husband Kevin Goldschmidt, said they were part of a group of six people during the outing, but witnesses claimed no one was with her at the luxury resort.
“Like most NFL journalists, reporters interact with sources away from stadiums and other venues,” she added at the time.
Russini has since resigned from his position at Athletic.
“Rather than continue, I have decided to step down before my current contract expires on June 30th,” Russini said in a statement shared on social media after the photo was published.
“I do so not because I accept the narrative built around this episode, but because I refuse to give it further oxygen or let it define me or my career.”
According to ESPN, an NFL spokesperson said last week that the league is not investigating the actions of the New England Patriots head coach as part of its personal conduct policy.
