Duchess Meghan gave a rare interview about her personal style. The Duchess of Sussex has revealed that she is a stylist. She also shared her go-to dressing tips for creating “timeless” outfits and detailed the thinking behind her Australian travel wardrobe.
After completing a four-day trip to Australia, Meghan reflected on the outfits she wore during the trip and her choices as a stylist in a rare interview with Australian Women’s Weekly.
She intentionally wore pieces from Australian brands during her visit. (She intentionally chooses clothing from designers from the countries she visits.) “I love being able to wear clothes from local designers and celebrate the craftsmanship that goes on in any region I travel to,” she explained. “During my trip to Australia in 2018, I paid particular attention to small labels, women-owned brands, up-and-coming designers, and brands with a purpose. I personally really enjoy choosing items, so I was really happy to do that again on this trip. It was amazing to see how many new brands were coming out with such great pieces, and also to revisit brands like Karen Gee, whose dress I wore when I announced my pregnancy with Archie all those years ago. (Meghan wore a navy Priscilla dress by Karen Gee for the first day of her Australian tour this month, and a white blessed dress when she shared the news of her first pregnancy in 2018.)
She explained the idea behind the ensemble: “We put together each look with a different vibe in mind, and we loved each look for different reasons. We didn’t always have time to change things up from place to place, so it was fun to get creative.”
Duchess Kate also detailed the styling tips she uses. “I usually gravitate toward clothing in similar colors because it looks streamlined, but I also feel like it’s much easier to put the look together,” she said. “It takes some of the guesswork out of it and makes it feel timeless.”
She also makes sure her attire is properly credited because she understands the impact it has on her business. “Fashion is one of the most powerful industries,” she said. “It influences how we feel and what we project. And even if you don’t say anything, you can say something with what you wear. Over the past few years, I’ve heard stories, via affiliate links and the press, of the wrong designer being credited for what I wear, but that’s never the case. It didn’t seem fair. Credit where credit is due. These brands and designers work very hard and take great pride in their work. And I choose them for a reason, either to support a friend or to be loyal to the brand.”
