Laura Dern has joined the cast of Season 4 of The White Lotus, Variety has confirmed.
Dern joins the series in place of Helena Bonham Carter, who recently left the series shortly after filming began. However, Dern is not simply taking over the role held by Bonham Carter. Instead, she is playing a new character developed by series mastermind Mike White.
Previously announced cast members include Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Greiner, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz. Additional cast includes Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustafsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet.
According to the official description for Season 4, “Season 4 follows a new group of guests and employees of the White Lotus Hotel over the course of a week during the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to Cannes, the season will be filmed in Saint-Tropez, Monaco, and Paris, but the story remains set in Court d’Azur.
White will serve as writer, director, and executive producer. David Barnado and Mark Kamin will also serve as executive producers.
The role will reunite White and Dern under the HBO umbrella. The two previously co-created the HBO series “Enlightened,” which also starred Dern. They also collaborated on the film Year of the Dog, which White wrote and directed and Dern played a supporting role. Dern also had an uncredited voice cameo in Season 2 of The White Lotus.
Dern has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards, including her 2017 win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role in Big Little Lies. Her other nominations have come from her work in projects such as “Palm Royale,” “The Tale,” and “Enlightened.” She has been nominated for three Academy Awards, winning Best Supporting Actress in 2020 for “Marriage Story.” Her other credits include the “Jurassic Park” franchise, 2019’s “Little Women” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
