Variety reported that Hulu has released a full-length series version of the popular web show “Childish Deano.”
The eight-episode half-hour comedy, now simply titled “Deano,” comes from creators Dean Thomas and David Ferrier. Both serve as writers on the series, with Thomas providing the voice of Deano. Joe Blum, creator of the hit children’s animated show Bluey, will also serve as executive producer on this film, his first producing credit for an adult animated series.
Hooligan Animation will produce the show at its studio in Brisbane, Australia, with support from the Australian Federal Government’s Producer Offset and a PDV grant from the State of Queensland. Hooligan’s Greg Vasser, Tracy Robertson, Ross Schuman, Nathan Mayfield and Tracy Vieira will all executive produce the show alongside BBC Studios’ Adam Bailey. Co-produced by BBC Studios, 20th Television Animation and Hooligan Animation. BBC Studios will be the lead studio, and Hulu will distribute the program worldwide.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring our spicy kid and his sidekicks to a global audience on two of the world’s biggest story megaphones: Disney and the BBC,” said Thomas and Ferrier. “It’s so unrealistic I’m half expecting someone to say it’s a prank.”
The show will premiere on Hulu and Disney+ for Bundle subscribers in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally. In the UK, the series will first premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, before also streaming on Disney+.
The official description for the show reads:
“Diano is a lively, sassy, charming boy whose tough exterior belies a true heart of gold. He’s the most endearing, feisty kid you’ll ever meet, growing up in a reprehensible home in a ruthlessly harsh neighborhood. He has no concept of anything stacked against him and accepts everyone as an equal, from the local teenage downcast to the town’s police chief. It’s a friendship between Diano and his shy friend Kit, oblivious to Diano’s circumstances and drawn to his friend’s energy and fearless worldview, stepping straight into an unfiltered world where empathy leaks out every moment, yet somehow Diano still shines as a beacon of irreverent optimism, reminding us how good life really is.
“Deano is a smart, character-driven and terrifyingly irreverent series that stays with you long after the credits have rolled,” said Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer, BBC Studios Global Content. “As our first foray into adult animation, this project and the partnership behind it reflects BBC Studios’ commitment to innovation and creative boldness. Disney is an ideal collaborator alongside Hooligan and the BBC, who share our ambition to bring conversation-starting storytelling to the world.”
