Sandra Bullock “spent a lot of time healing” with her children after the tragic death of her longtime partner Brian Randall three years ago.
“After everything she went through with Brian, she needed time to take care of herself,” a source close to the actress told People on Thursday, referring to Randall’s secret three-year battle with ALS, which she ultimately lost in August 2023.
“She spent a lot of time healing, spending time with her kids and at home,” the source added. “She needed to make sure she and her children were in the best place to return to work.”
The Oscar winner and Randall did not have children, but the family lived happily ever after.
Block, 61, adopted son Louis, now 16, in 2010. Five years later, she adopted a 3-year-old girl, Laila, now 14, from a foster home in Louisiana.
Randall had an adult daughter named Skyler from a previous relationship.
This photographer passed away on August 5, 2023. At the time, his family confirmed the tragic news in a statement shared with Page Six.
“We are saddened to announce that Brian Randall passed away peacefully on August 5th after a three-year battle with ALS,” his family said.
“Brian chose early on to keep his ALS history private, and those of us who cared for him did our best to accommodate his wishes.”
Randall, who was 57 at the time of his death, first met the Blind Side actress on Louis’ birthday in January 2015. The two hit it off right away and began dating soon after.
In October of the same year, she made her red carpet debut at the premiere of Block’s film Our Brand Is Crisis.
Although they have largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight, the Oscar winner has spoken passionately about Randall and his family, who were already privately battling ALS.
“I found the love of my life,” she said in a December 2021 “Red Table Talk” interview. “We have two beautiful children. Three children and his older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.”
“He’s the example I want my kids to have.”
During the interview, she also talked about how “saint” Randall was when she told him of her intention to adopt their second child, even though “we hadn’t been together that long.”
She has also not spoken publicly about his death.
She also explained that despite their deep love for each other, she had no plans to marry Randall because she wanted to put her children first.
“You don’t need papers to be a devoted partner and a devoted mother,” she explained. “You don’t have to be told to always be present during the toughest times. You don’t have to be told to ride out the storm with good people.”
Bullock has never spoken publicly about his death and has not had any public relationships since.
