Writer-director Lee Kirk’s comedy “Nimrods: A Green Day Story,” based on the adventures of a rock band living in a van before their 1994 hit album “Dookie,” hits the Cannes market.
Palisades Park Pictures has acquired international sales for the film, which will be released in theaters worldwide in August, with Innogular Entertainment handling distribution in the United States.
The film, which premiered in Toronto, stars Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn, Bobby Lee, and Fred Armisen, as well as appearances and performances by Green Day members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt.
“Nimrods” is a coming-of-age film about three high school friends who embark on a wild road trip under the mistaken belief that their fledgling band is booked to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.
The film will be produced by Armstrong, Dirnt and Kuhl in collaboration with Process’s Tim Perel. Executive producers include Live Nation Studios’ Ryan Craft and Michael Rapinoe and Jonathan Daniel.
“Director Lee has created a coming-of-age comedy with real heart and edge that captures the confusion, humor and ambition of youth in an authentic and relatable way,” said Tamara Birkemor, CEO of Palisades Park Pictures. “With Green Day’s cultural energy at its core and an up-and-coming all-star cast assembled, we can’t wait for audiences to experience Nimrod.”
Kirk, who previously directed Armstrong on Universal’s Ordinary World, directed Nimrod from his own script, which he developed with the band and Live Nation Studios. Kirk’s other works include the comedy “Pants on Fire” and the quirky romantic comedy “The Giant Mechanical Man,” starring Jenna Fischer and Topher Grace.
