Gavin Newsom says he is considering running for president in 2028

Gavin Newsom is teasing a run for president in 2028.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the California governor said he would be “lying otherwise” if he said he wasn’t considering running for president after his term ends in 2027. However, the governor is not 100% sure about that idea.

“I don’t know,” Newsom said. “The idea that a guy who got a 960 on the SAT and still can’t read scripts and is always in the back of the classroom is going to throw it away is insane. Who knows? I’m looking forward to seeing who will show up in 2028 and who will have that moment. That’s the question for the American people.”

Newsom focused on the midterm elections, saying it is critical for Democrats to take back the House in 2026 to restore a “rebalancing system.” He also worries that if Mike Johnson remains Speaker of the House, Republicans may try to push for a “third term for President Trump.”

“If we succeed, (Trump’s) de facto presidential term ends next November. If we the people succeed in taking back the House,” Newsom said. “His presidency, as we know it today, is effectively over. The fire and fury probably means something. But at last you have rebalanced this system.”

Another prominent Democrat, former Vice President Kamala Harris, recently spoke about her future aspirations. “I’m not done. I’ve lived my whole career as a life of service and it’s in my bones,” she said of working in politics on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.
