“Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson gave conflicting answers about the future of the HBO show after Sunday’s Season 3 finale.
In an interview with Esquire, Levinson did not rule out a fourth season.
“I mean, I don’t know. I went into every season like it was the last season. If they said, ‘That’s it, Sam, pack your bags. We don’t need another one,'” the 41-year-old TV producer told the outlet.
“That’s how I approach it, at least for my own sanity,” he added. “I don’t want to feel like I left nothing on the field.”
However, during an appearance on the New York Times podcast Popcast, Levinson insisted that season 3 would be the show’s last.
“This feels like the end for me in terms of the story we were trying to tell, the story about addiction and its effects,” he said.
“It’s been a very fulfilling journey for this cast and crew and what we were able to accomplish,” Levinson continued. “A thousand things have to fall into place to create something like this. I’m so grateful for the work we did and the story we told.”
Levinson acknowledged that the Season 3 finale, in which Zendaya’s character Lou Bennett accidentally overdosed, had a “tragic” ending, but that her fate was real.
“If you’re experimenting with drugs or taking drugs right now, there’s a very good chance you’re going to die because of it,” he said, noting that Lou’s death was also “a way to honor” late star Angus Cloud, who died at age 25 from an accidental overdose in July 2025.
One of the hosts asked Levinson, “Is that all? Does Euphoria end with Lou?” to which he replied, “Yeah. I mean, what else is there to say?”
HBO confirmed to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter that the show has ended after three seasons.
Page Six has reached out to the network for comment.
‘Euphoria’ Season 3 sparked backlash even before the finale for killing off Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) and Cassie Howard’s (Sydney Sweeney) controversial OnlyFans storyline.
In the finale, Lou died after swallowing a pill containing lace given to him by Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.
Although fans were upset by Rue’s overdose, Levinson defended the decision to kill off Zendaya’s character in a post-final HBO interview, saying her death was “the most honest ending” for the show.
He also noted that “people like Lou,” who struggled with addiction throughout the three seasons, “didn’t make it.”
