Kane Parsons’ Backrooms has already broken A24’s opening weekend record.
Backrooms, based on Parsons’ viral YouTube series, grossed $38 million from 3,442 theaters in Japan on Friday and is expected to gross between $85 million and $90 million by the end of the week. That’s more than triple the previous record holder, Alex Garland’s thriller “Civil War,” which earned $25.5 million in 2024 and took the title of A24’s best debut feature.
“Backrooms” is the story of a small town furniture store owner who discovers a portal to another world in his showroom. The cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, and more. Produced by James Wan, Shawn Levy, and Osgood Perkins. Chernin Entertainment was a co-studio and co-investor on “Backrooms.”
Other new releases this weekend include Nate Bergatze’s family comedy “The Breadwinner” and Focus Features’ war drama “Pressure.” “The Breadwinner” grossed $2.75 million from 3,525 theaters in North America on Friday, the best of the two films, and finished in fifth place. Revenue is expected to be $7.5 million by Sunday.
TriStar Pictures’ “The Breadwinner” follows Bargazze as a father who is forced to manage a chaotic household when his wife goes on a month-long business trip. Other cast members include Mandy Moore, Stella Grace Fitzgerald, Birdie Bollea, Charlotte Ann Tucker, Colin Jost, and Zach Cherry.
“Pressure” ranked No. 6 on Friday with $2.46 million on 1,829 domestic screens. It is expected to gross $5.4 million by the end of the week. The World War II thriller stars Brendan Fraser as Dwight D. Eisenhower, who must face harsh conditions and decide whether to start D-Day or not. Other cast members include Andrew Scott, Kelly Condon, Chris Messina, Damian Lewis, and Tamsin Topolski.
Friday’s silver medal goes to Curry Barker’s “Obsession,” which earned $8.1 million in its third Friday of release. The indie horror, which grossed a whopping $28 million on Memorial Day, is expected to earn another $28 million by Sunday. This is a 19% increase over the $22 million it earned in three days last weekend.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu opened in North American theaters on its second Friday in third place with just $6.5 million, a 70% drop from its opening day. Initial projections were for the Lucasfilm western to gross $40 million by Sunday, but rival estimates now suggest that number is closer to $25 million. These numbers bring the film’s domestic box office gross to $136 million over the two-day weekend.
Lionsgate’s “Michael” added $3.5 on Friday to take fourth place. It is on track to collect $12.7 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic gross to $340 million in its first six weekends.
