The British and Irish box office had a historic opening weekend, with A24’s psychological horror “Backrooms” taking top spot with £4.2 million ($5.7 million).

Disney’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu” placed second in the second film slot, earning $3.5 million. The film grossed a total of $15.2 million in its 10 days in theaters.
Universal’s biographical music drama “Michael” ranked third in its sixth week of release. The film’s lifetime box office revenue increased by $2.3 million, with its UK box office total reaching $64.7 million. The studio also had Curry Barker’s horror-romance “Obsession” in fourth place, taking in $2.1 million in the third slot. This genre breakout hit has grossed a total of $9.2 million.
Disney’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 cracked the top five in its fifth weekend, collecting $1.1 million for a total of $43.3 million.
“The Sheep Detectives,” distributed by Sony, placed sixth in the fourth slot, adding $957,622 for a peak of $11.2 million. Black Bear’s “Tuner,” starring Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman, came in seventh with $486,660.
Universal’s “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” remains a steady chart regular at No. 8 in its ninth week, adding $298,387 for a current total of $51.2 million. Lionsgate UK John Carney’s musical comedy “Power Ballad” starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas debuted at No. 9 with $274,191.
Paramount’s supernatural horror “Passengers” broke into the top 10 in its second week, raking in $1 million at the box office with $199,478.
Ahead of the upcoming theatrical release slot, the release schedule is anchored by Sony Pictures’ long-awaited live-action adaptation Masters of the Universe. Directed by Travis Knight and based on Mattel’s Media series, the sword-and-sorcery epic stars Nicholas Galitzine and co-stars Camila Mendes, Jared Leto and Idris Elba, and opens in more than 300 locations on Wednesday, June 3.
Other new releases arriving on Friday, June 5 include Paramount’s revival of the parody series Scary Movies, Paramount’s Peter Grants’ Savage House starring Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy (screening in more than 300 locations), and Icon’s Welsh biopic about Celyn Jones Mad Fabulous. Zee Studios International releases Indian author Anurag Kashyap’s Toronto production ‘Bandar’.
The selection of repertoire and events also diversifies the weekend box office, with CinemaLive’s “Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show” screening alongside Miracle Combs’ “Bonnie & Clive” and Piece of Magic Entertainment’s “Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act” on Sunday, June 7th.
