“We’re safe,” Craig Melvin assured “Today” show viewers after Thursday’s horrifying security breach.
“I would like to tell you a little bit about the incident that happened yesterday,” the journalist said on Friday morning. “Unfortunately, you may have heard that an intruder has entered an unauthorized area here in Studio 1A.
“Thankfully he was arrested quickly,” Melvin, 47, continued. “He has been arrested and we are fully cooperating with the NYPD as they investigate this matter.”
The co-anchor concluded, “I’m really happy that everyone is safe.”
Laura Jarrett, who was filling in for Savannah Guthrie, responded, “We want to make sure you’re safe,” and Melvin confirmed, “You’re safe.”
The NBC personality initially addressed the issue on Instagram, writing, “Hey everyone. So many of you have reached out to me in the last few hours. I’m fine.”
She added, “Thank you for reaching out. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow.”
The man who confronted Melvin on the steps of the New York City headquarters, looking for weather forecaster Al Roker, was identified as Andrew Truelove.
Page Six reported that the 41-year-old man hurled racial slurs at Melvin for eight to 10 seconds before being arrested.
He was taken into custody Thursday, and officials said a security guard was fired over the incident.
According to the paper, True Love has been arrested in the city on eight unsealed cases, mainly for prank purposes.
He has been charged with hate crimes of theft, menacing and trespassing, as well as harassment charges following Thursday’s debacle.
NBC released a statement about how it takes “the safety and security of its employees, talent, staff and guests ‘very seriously.’
The network went on to say, “Today is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies investigating this matter. … We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at or visits our studios.”
Insiders say Page Six staff are “nervous.” Especially after Savannah’s still-missing mother, Nancy Guthrie, was kidnapped in February.
