Seth Rogen admitted he couldn’t stop thanking and apologizing to Penelope Cruz while filming a sex scene for her new movie, The Invite.
The “Superbad” and “Pineapple Express” star, 44, gave a behind-the-scenes story on Tuesday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and revealed that she kept unconsciously saying “thank you” while improvising an intimate scene with the Oscar-winning actress, 52.
“What’s really funny about this scene is that we were encouraged to improvise,” Rogen told guest host Ike Barinholtz.
“There’s a scene where me and my girlfriend are having a romantic moment and we’re almost bonding over each other, but I just kept saying, ‘Thank you.’
“And Olivia Wilde, the director, was like, ‘Why? What are you doing? Why do you keep saying ‘thank you’?” he continued.
“And I was like, ‘I don’t know. It’s just coming out of my mouth.'”
Rogen said the reaction reflected how he feels in real life.
“All I have is gratitude,” he said. “I would like to express my apologies and gratitude. I am sorry.”
Actor Cruise, who has been married to Lauren Miller since 2011, joked that he was nervous about filming the scene because he is married to fellow Oscar winner Javier Bardem.
“So you’re very worried about that,” Rogen said, adding with a laugh. “I don’t think he sees me as a legitimate threat in any way.”
Rogen also revealed that some moments in the film were improvised. He said Mr. Cruise suggested singing “Shards” during one romantic scene.
“It was Penelope Cruz’s idea,” he said. “We have a romantic scene and she says, ‘What if I start singing Sade to you?'” It’s kind of sexy, but it’s also kind of hilarious. ”
Rogen also came up with his own ideas for this scene, but it didn’t turn out well for him.
“If I’m trying to take off my pants and maybe I’m struggling and I end up falling in that scene, that’s funny,” he said. “And I did it. Everyone says, ‘That was great.'”
“I hurt my shoulder for seven months after that,” he joked.
The Invite stars Wilde as Angela and Rogen as her husband Joe, whose marriage is thrown into turmoil when a wealthy couple, Pina, played by Cruise, and Hawk, played by Edward Norton, propose to her.
Wilde recently shared another impromptu moment while filming “The Invite,” telling the podcast “Table Manners” that Cruise unexpectedly kissed her during a scene.
“I was shocked,” Wilde said. “I turned my head and looked directly into the lens.”
Wilde recalled that when the cameraman said her name, she blurted out, “Cut. Namaste!”
“That’s the only thing that came to my mind: ‘Namaste,'” she said. “And everyone was like, ‘What?’” And I was like, “I don’t know.” ”
“I was so shocked by this moment that my mind went blank,” Wilde added. “I lost control. I became obsessed with her.”
